In Soul Repair, Jeff Van Vonderen and Dale and Juanita Ryan identified some distorted images of God that we have constructed “out of our experiences of resentment, disappointment, fear, pain and shame.” Here are three of the distorted images of God,according to the authors...
The abusive god.
The abandoning god.
The god of impossible expectations.
The problem with all those distorted images of God is that they result in people relating to Him out of fear and shame. Any image of God besides the good and beautiful God of love and grace revealed in
Jesus is inaccurate and unhealthy.

God is Holy
…different, set apart
God is holy—profoundly set apart, and infinitely different.
He is apart from the ordinary…separate from the finite…the “entirely other.”
“Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God…” (Romans 11:22).
God forbid that I find you so familiar that I think of You as less than Who You are. God forbid that I should speak of You at all without a humble reverence in my heart, (Kyle Matthews and Tony Wood).
Our fear is softened by the love of Him, and our love is sobered by our fear of Him, (John Henry Newman).
“So the women hurried away from the tomb,
afraid yet filled with joy!” (Matthew 28:8).
…holy, Christ-like lives
“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy,’”
(1 Peter 1:15-17).

“And we all…are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit,” (2 Corinthians 3:18).
“…you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator,” (Colossians 3:9-10).
Life transformation is the church’s business.
And this life transformation begins with us.
“Everybody thinks of changing humanity and nobody thinks of changing himself.” (Leo Tolstoy)
The Bible depicts spiritual transformation as discovering and uncovering the image of God in us. And to understand that, we have to go back to Eden, where humankind was created in God’s image.
That image was marred, tarnished in Eden and we’ve continue to mar and tarnish it.
How do we get it back?
It begins with a conversion—an experience so dramatic, so radical, that Jesus called it being born again.
Practice Spiritual Disciplines.
Discover, uncover, and live up to the image of God in you.
