School of the Arts - FAQs

  • Who may apply?

    Any individual interested in developing and/or enhancing their music education.

  • What lessons are offered?

    Individual Lessons:

    • piano
    • organ     
    • trumpet
    • voice
    • harpsichord
    • oboe
    • guitar 

    Group Lessons:

    • Musikgarten (a comprehensive music curricula for children ages: birth to 9 years)
    • Suzuki violin (ages 3 to adult)
  • When are lessons offered?

    Individual and group lessons are offered Monday through Saturday at times agreed upon by the student and teacher.

  • How do I apply?

    An application form can be downloaded or picked up from the School of the Arts (SOTA) office at the Buford Road Campus of Bon Air Baptist Church. 

  • Where do I submit a completed application?

  • Where will lessons be held?

    Lessons will be held at the Buford Road Campus of Bon Air Baptist Church. 

  • Is there security?

    The safety of students is of the utmost importance to the staff at Bon Air Baptist Church. Surveillance cameras are installed in the church and the church parking lot.  

  • Where do I enter the building when I come for lessons?

    All SOTA students should enter the building through the Forest Hill Avenue entrance.

  • When is tuition due?

    The School of the Arts operates on a semester system for payment of fees. Our students may choose one of these payment options:

    Option #1: Full tuition may be paid at the beginning of the semester.

    Option #2: Full tuition may be divided into two equal payments. One half is due at the beginning of the semester and the balance within 30 days.

  • What forms of payment does SOTA accept?

    We only accept on-line payment.

  • How do I request a certain Teacher?

    Students wishing to study under a particular teacher should reference that individual on their application.

  • What is the policy regarding tardiness and missed lessons?

    All students and instructors are expected to honor their lesson time.

    Absence: The student is responsible for contacting the teacher if a lesson is to be missed. If the teacher is unavailable, the student should call the SOTA office. Students who fail to cancel their lesson will be recorded as a “no show” and will NOT be given a make-up lesson. Make-up lessons will be granted (2 per semester) for excused absences ONLY.   If the instructor cancels the lesson, the student will be notified as far in advance as possible. Lessons will be rescheduled at a mutually agreed upon time.   If the School of Arts closes due to inclement weather, lessons will be rescheduled.  

    Tardiness: Students who arrive more than 10 minutes late, forfeit their lesson. A make-up lesson may be scheduled at the instructor’s discretion.   When the instructor is more than10 minutes late, the student may request a make-up lesson.   Students who arrive tardy, but are less than 10 minutes late will be granted the balance of the scheduled lesson time.

  • Will there be a recital?

    Yes. Students are not required to but are encouraged to participate in recitals.

  • What if a student wishes to discontinue lessons?

    The School of the Arts requires a 30-day written notice from students wishing to discontinue their instruction. Students will be required to pay for lessons that occur within the 30 days from the date notice is given.  Refunds will be prorated based upon the length of time the student received instruction. No refunds will be given to students who withdraw after eight weeks of instruction.
